The term "authenticity" is thrown around a lot these days; and yes, I use it too! So what does it mean in terms of personal branding photography?

In a recent conversation with a fellow woman in business, she put the question to me: "What does ‘authenticity’ mean to you in front of the camera—and how do you capture that for each client?"

As a photographer, we're given the challenge of putting words into an image; creating a feeling or impression without using any words.

So how can you show authenticity through imagery?

To me, being authentic in your personal brand photos means being who you are; not sticking to a certain vibe or style if it's not you; not being formal if you don't want to be; having fun with your photos- not taking yourself too seriously!

People are craving to connect with the woman behind the business. They want to see someone relatable and relevant. They're probably following you or supporting you because they align with your values. So, don't be afraid to show them who you are.

Ever seen photos of someone you know and they look rigid and uncomfortable? Because they've been put into a pose that just doesn't fit them?

That, to me, is being in authentic. The viewer can tell that it doesn't represent or reflect you, which I think, would create confusion about how you want to be perceived.

Your authenticity is your super power in business— so use it to your advantage!

It's going to be the way that you stand out amongst others in your industry, it's going to be the reason that you are chosen over someone else. It's the way you'll connect with those who align with your business, and remind them you're their go-to gal for whatever it is you do.

You might've heard the saying: people buy from people, not brands. I think this is so true these days.

People are making more conscious, mindful decisions about how and where they spend their money. They want to be convinced that their investment is going to someone real; someone deserving.

Authentic imagery is the way you'll tell your story in a way that resonates with those it's meant to; and given that most of the content that people consume these days is visual— it's really important that you show them; rather than just tell them.

So now that I've got you thinking about this, it'd be rude of me not to leave you with some lasting tips to apply when you go into your next brand shoot!

  1. Know your why – Before you even step in front of the camera, you should get clear on who your audience is, and what you want your audience to feel when they see your photos. Is it trust? Approachability? Knowledgable? Let that guide the way you portray yourself.
  2. Wear what makes you feel good - Forget what you think you should wear. Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. That energy will show through in the final images.
  3. Don't do any poses that make you feel uncomfortable - BUT still be open to guidance from your photographer. If they suggest something but you feel like it's really not working for you, then let them know, they'll change it up!
  4. Leave any expectations about how you think professional photos should be - You might've seen billboards of real estate agents, or heroic shots of men, or plain, flat LinkedIn photos that don't resonate with you. Focus on how you want to be seen, how you want to show up, and let your photographer bring out the best of you.

Remember: You are worthy of being seen, just as you are.
