There's five key shots that I believe every business should have in their image gallery.
When it comes to building a strong personal brand, having the right images in your gallery can make all the difference. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a service provider, or a creative professional, the right set of photos can elevate your online presence, build trust with your audience, and make your marketing efforts seamless.
These are the exact shots I focus on during my 20-minute Headshot Sessions because they provide versatility, even with a small image gallery. They ensure my clients walk away with images that are both strategic and stylish, ready to use across their website, social media, and marketing materials.
So, what are these five essential shots that every business should have? Let’s dive in!
1. The classic headshot
The classic headshot is as basic as it gets, but, is an essential part of your personal brand. When you think of the classic headshot, think of a LinkedIn profile pic. It’s tidy, simple, formal with a clear shot of your face.
Why it’s important:
- First impressions count, and a polished headshot instantly establishes credibility.
- It ensures consistency across platforms, making you more recognisable.
- It’s often required for business profiles, guest features, or speaking engagements.
How you can use them:
- LinkedIn profile pic
- Introduction post for your socials
- "About" page on website
- Team photo on staff directory
Pro tip: Keep it timeless. Opt for neutral backgrounds and natural lighting to ensure longevity in its use.
2. The personality shot
The personality shot is a more natural and casual headshot that portrays your unique energy; it’s not as rigid as the classic headshot. We can incorporate some props and switch a pose up a for something a little more laid back.
Why it’s important:
- It helps your audience connect with you on a personal level.
- It showcases authenticity, which is crucial for building trust online.
- It’s perfect for social media, especially Instagram and introduction posts.
How you can use them:
- Social media profile picture
- A less formal LinkedIn profile picture if that's your vibe
- When you want to post a life update or share something more personal with your audience
Pro tip: Wear something that reflects your personality or brand colours. If you're playful, add an element of fun—maybe a coffee cup, a notebook, or a candid laugh.
3. The action shot
The action shot is a way to show your audience what you do, and for solo-preneurs, this can mean so many things; usually we are the ones managing our own admin and social media - so even a shot of you working on your laptop or on your phone is representative of what you do.
Why it’s important:
- It visually communicates your expertise and process.
- It brings variety to your content, breaking up traditional headshots.
- It positions you as a professional actively engaged in your work.
How you can use them:
- Share with your audience an insight into what you really do behind the scenes
- As the background to text posts on social media
- As your website header on your "Services" page on your website
Pro tip: Consider taking a few variations—some close-ups of your hands at work, a shot of you deep in focus, and a more relaxed version of you mid-action
4. the client interaction shot
The client interaction shot aims to show you as a friendly customer facing service. This could look like you talking to a client or showing them a product that you offer.
Why it’s important:
- It builds trust by showcasing real interactions with happy clients.
- It demonstrates that you are a customer-centric business.
- It’s an excellent way to add a storytelling element to your branding, and give those warm fuzzies.
How you can use them:
- Share a post about why you love what you do
- Use it to highlight your services and what makes them or you, unique
- This could also be used on your website on your "Services" page
Pro tip: If you don’t have a client available, stage a natural-looking interaction with a friend or colleague. Ensure the energy feels genuine and inviting.
5. the branded stock photo
So you’ve heard of stock images? Branded stock photos are intentionally created shots that basically act as space fillers for your socials. This is a photo where you’re not the focus of the shot, your face is usually off camera which directs the viewer's eye elsewhere. They are on-brand, representative of your specific business.
Why it’s important:
- It acts as a versatile content filler for social media, websites, and ads.
- It helps maintain brand consistency with on-brand visuals.
- It allows you to create a professional look without using generic stock images.
How you can use them:
- Backdrop to a text post, with information or a quote
- Website, email newsletter or blog header
- Background for Instagram Stories or Reel Covers
Pro tip: Capture images of your workspace, branded stationery or props, products, or creative flat lays that visually tell your brand story.
A strong brand is more than just a logo or a website—it’s how you show the incredible woman behind your business.
These five essential shots will help you craft a compelling, professional, and approachable brand identity that resonates with your audience.
